Bothered by Headaches and Jaw Soreness?

TMD – What is it?

TMD stands for “Temporo Mandibular Disorder.” It has also been called “TMJ” which means “Temporo
M
andibular Joint.” In other words – your jaw joints.

TMD is about the problems with your jaw joints, which are the most complex joints in the body. It’s also about the muscles around your jaw joints and it’s also about your teeth.

As doctors of the oral cavity, dentists have an interest in treating this often complex and perplexing condition. But seeing your regular dentist may not be sufficient, since all dentists do not have the appropriate training or expertise.

TMD is a Medical Problem

It can be caused by muscle imbalances; problems with your teeth and the way they come together during chewing (referred to as “occlusion”) and can also be caused by damage or disease to the disk in your jaw joint.

Symptoms to Watch for:

Headaches
Ringing in the ears
Clicking of the jaw joints
Difficulty swallowing
Facial pain
Difficulty in opening your mouth
Teeth that have become worn down
Earaches
Dizziness
Sleep difficulties

TMD is often a chronic, degenerative disease

That is why it is important for anyone who is experiencing symptoms to schedule an appointment for a consultation with a qualified dental professional.

The sooner TMD is accurately diagnosed, the easier it is to treat

Many patients experience relief of their symptoms shortly after beginning treatment. More than 95% of all patients can be treated successfully without surgery of any kind!
